So she connected with the WorkSmart Network in 2017 for tuition assistance and supportive services through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

During her program, Melanie provided encouragement to her fellow classmates and was a champion for her own children, the oldest of which was preparing for their own college journey. At her nursing graduation ceremony, Melanie was even pinned by her children.

After passing the state board exam, Melanie felt prepared with the skills needed to succeed and accepted a case management position at Agrace. Her next goal is to become a Wound Care Certified Nurse.

“You can overcome obstacles at any age to better your life and career. There are a lot of resources at Madison College to help you along the way, such as advisors, instructors and [the] WorkSmart advisor who was so helpful to me throughout.”

At the 2021 WDBSCW Annual Awards Celebration, Melanie received the Aspire Award for her achievements and commitment to success.
