Dislocation Turns Into New Career Opportunity

Laid off worker explores new careers with WorkSmart.

Robert was laid off from LSC Communications in August 2020 after 34 years in the printing industry. He attended a Rapid Response session where he learned about the services available through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker Program, including resume assistance, career exploration and interview preparation.

“My primary interest in [enrolling in WIOA] was to see what’s out there as far as job opportunities, and then really probably working with someone on resumes.”

Robert connected with his WIOA Career Planner for help finding a job that matched his skills and updating his resume to fit different industries. He also mock interviewed with his WIOA Career Planner, which helped him anticipate the types of questions employers would ask.

In March 2021, Robert was hired as a metal and plastics worker at Rockwell Industries.

“[WorkSmart] is great and I enjoyed talking with [my WIOA Career pLanner]. Every time we chatted […] it was good for me and if something happened again, I would be [going to WorkSmart] again.”
