Turning Second Chances into Success

Workforce Development Board bridges gap between reentry and employment through Pathways Home grant

For Jacob Coby, the road to rebuilding his life started before he even walked out the prison gates. While incarcerated, he knew he wanted to make a real change, not just for himself but for his future. Three weeks before his release on January 21, Jacob connected with Pathways Home Career Coach Jeff Kennedy, determined to take advantage of every opportunity available to him.

From the beginning, Jeff recognized Jacob's positivity, drive, and commitment to building a better future. Though many struggle with the uncertainty of reentry, Jacob took an active role in planning for his success. He asked questions, sought out guidance, and stayed focused on his goal - securing stable employment and creating a new path for himself.

Upon release into Dane County, Jacob didn’t waste any time. He followed up with Jeff immediately, eager to take the next step. With Jeff’s help, he explored different career paths, connected with potential employers, and secured gas vouchers to ensure transportation was never a barrier. Every step of the way, Jacob showed up with determination and a willingness to put in the work.

“Jeff went above and beyond—connecting me with the right people, helping me find job opportunities, and the gas vouchers he helped me obtain were clutch in getting me to work,” Jacob shared.

His perseverance paid off. Today, Jacob is thriving as part of a management team in retail sales, an achievement that once felt out of reach! He’s not just working—he’s leading, proving that with the right support and a determined mindset, real transformation is possible.

Looking back, Jacob acknowledges that the support he received made all the difference. “Without Jeff’s help, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’m so grateful for everything he and the Workforce Development Board of South Central Wisconsin have done for me.”

Jeff emphasizes the profound impact of the Pathways Home program, noting that individuals who connected with him within 72 hours of release are significantly more likely to succeed.

“To date, two-thirds of participants who met with me in that critical time frame are now either successfully connected to housing and employment, or are in the interview stages of the job search,” Jeff proudly highlights.

Jacob’s journey is a reminder that preparation, perseverance, and the right support system can change the course of a person’s future. Programs like Pathways Home make these success stories possible, bridging the gap between reentry and meaningful employment. Through partnerships with the Department of Corrections and workforce development initiatives, individuals like Jacob can continue accessing the tools they need to build a better future.
