IL Program Participant Nevaeh Receives 2024 Champions of Change Award at the Governor's Mansion
MADISON, Wis.– Independent Living Program participant Nevaeh was honored with the Champions of Change Award for their remarkable determination, persistence, and passion for societal change!
This award, held at the Governor’s Mansion by the Wisconsin Dept. of Children and Families in honor of DJ (an aged-out-of-care youth and 2x recipient of the award who passed in 2020 due to COVID), recognizes two graduates who have been a Champion of Change in their efforts to improve youth-serving systems.
IL Coordinator Pricilla Reyes nominated Nevaeh, citing their incredible advocacy through numerous events and organizations. As part of their speech, Nevaeh acknowledged, “I would like to thank Pricilla for nominating me for this award and everyone who is doing the work within the foster care system to help support youth in their goals!”
Nevaeh has consistently created a meaningful impact with their involvement in the community. Most notably, Nevaeh spoke at the Pride flag-raising event held at the Capitol alongside Governor Tony Evers, where they shared their experience as an aged-out-of-care foster youth and highlighted the challenges associated with their sexual identity, giving a voice to underrepresented populations.
During their high school career, Nevaeh has participated in three clubs, completed more than 50 hours of community volunteer work, and organized fundraisers. They served as the Vice President of the Class of 2024 National Honor Society, and were an active member of the Black Student Union and Genders & Sexualities Alliances.
Nevaeh’s leadership extended to being a peer leader at Wanda Fullmore and a consistent community advocate, raising funds for Trevor’s Project and dedicating time to Shelter from the Storm, the animal rescue.
Nevaeh has also actively participated in local Youth Advisory Councils (YACs) as part of the IL Program to engage in discussions about foster care reform and personal development. Their dedication to creating safe spaces and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities is truly admirable.
While their career path remains undecided, Nevaeh is planning to attend Madison College and continue shining light on marginalized communities and driving change within social justice systems. We are so proud of Nevaeh and are honored to be part of their journey in discovering themselves!
