Kendall had been in and out of prison for the last 10 years. Determined to do something different and stay out of prison this time, he enrolled in the Windows to Work program.
Through the Department of Corrections-supported program, Kendall solidified his plans for success after release. He later enrolled in WIOA programming with the WorkSmart Network for additional skill training and career services. He also began attended Job Club, a club designed specifically for Windows to Work participants. The club offered him job leads, connections to community resources, and assistance with job applications and barriers to employment.
A few weeks after he was released, Kendall enrolled in cosmetology school and found a part-time job at a local restaurant. Despite the challenges of balancing work and schooling, he successfully graduated from the program a year later and began working at a local barbershop.
With new skills and a sustainable career, Kendall is now able to follow through with his child support responsibilities. He’s also reconnected with his daughter and has maintained a close relationship with her.
Now, Kendall is working at a different barbershop that is owned by another formerly incarcerated individual. Kendall is grateful to Windows to Work, the WorkSmart Network and others who supported him. He does not know if he would have finished and found success without their help.
